Working from home

Working from home may be an option you may wish to consider as an alternative from working from other premises. The ideal businesses that would be suitable for working from home are usually:

  • Consultancy
  • Teaching or training
  • 'Cottage' industry (e.g. crafts)
  • Professional services (e.g. accountancy)

You would need to consider how your customers would perceive the use of your home address. Ideally you should have a separate area or room for your office work. You may need to inform your local council if you are working from home, check this with your solicitor.

Advantages of working from home

  • Low or no rent or rates
  • No travelling costs
  • Can claim against tax for part of your utility bills (check with your accountant)
  • Be able to see more of your family

Disadvantages

  • May be difficult to separate family life from business
  • Lack of space
  • Distraction and interruptions
  • No business address

Consider the pros and cons of working from home carefully before making your final decision.
